Hi there. Welcome to Learning Shamanism.

This blog is going to document my learning journey into the world of Shamanism, Animism and related subjects. I have spent a lifetime studying spiritual subjects and spending hours in meditation. I have studied Buddhism (various schools), Vedanta, Taoism, Christianity, Raja Yoga and Sufism. Now it is the turn of Shamanism - I am retired from the rat race, so I have plenty of time to learn new things. But don't let the fact that you have a job or kids or other commitments put you off - anybody can incorporate the Shamanic way of thinking into there daily lives.

I first learnt about Shamanism through the works of Carlos Castaneda many years ago but there was no practical way to learn the subject in those days unless one went to live with an indigenous tribe somewhere and got lucky enough to be accepted as a student by the local Shaman.

These days it is very different and Shamanism is becoming almost "mainstream". This blog is my "journey" - I will try to share any useful information I pick up along the way.

The Last Post

This is the last post on this blog. I have spent over 5 years looking into what has become a "trendy" spiritual path for the unenlightened and curious. Although this is the "last post", I will be updating and adding stuff from time to time. As I have said elsewhere - no urban Westerner is ever going to become a Shaman (unless you get as lucky as Carlos Castaneda). Despite many "experts" criticism of Castaneda, I cannot recommend his books enough - to me, they are essential reading. The past 5 years of exploration have not changed my view on that. I have found that certain people have lied about their qualifications and abilities regarding the Shamanic Path in order to relieve gullible folks of their hard earned cash. I know everybody has to earn a living in this crazy materialistic world we live in but I believe that REAL spiritual teachings should be given freely if the student is sincere - as with Castaneda and Don Juan Matus. Finding My Power Animal

This is a record of my 4th or 5th shamanic journey. It is the second journey that I recorded in my journal. My journeys these days are less formalised and I tend to know where I am going - but these were early days. All I had to guide me were the (very good) instructions in Paul Francis ' book "The Shamanic Journey". I shall write exactly what I wrote down in my journal after the journey. This was written originally on October 1st 2018 at 7 am. I started to play a 30 minute drumming track. I set my intention to find my Power Animal by asking the "Great Spirit" to help me find my Power Animal on this journey. I left my body dressed in my monks habit with a hood. I seem to always don this garb when journeying (Note :- I no longer do this. My attire changes according to the nature of the journey). Stone Age, New Age or Virtual Reality Simulation?

 Here's the thing - "Shamanism" is just one word but it can mean all kinds of different things to different people. I have just started doing the First Steps course with Paul Francis and the Three Ravens College of Therapeutic Shamanism - more as a refresher for myself than an attempt to learn something new. (I have read all Pauls' books, so I am very familiar with his take on Core Shamanism). Paul is a great teacher but there is one thing he is very dogmatic about (an unshamanic trait) and that is his insistence that the "Lower World" is a pristine environment as would have been experienced by hunter gatherer humans living in what we call the "Stone Age". I am not saying he is wrong but this is not a universal belief among shamanic people. There most likely was a "Blueprint" for planet Earth that was pure, natural, beautiful and unpolluted by modern human greed, ignorance and mental illness - but is this our Prime Reality or not?
